Some Surprising Facts About TV Binge Watching

21 Jul 2015

How you watch TV shows looks different now than it did twenty years ago.

The TV watching lanscape has definitely made a shift over to the digital viewing world. With the rise of mobile phones, tablets and the innovation of the Internet of Things, more and more people are using technology to watch TV.

So, how do you watch TV and videos? Do you binge watch a whole series on Netflix? Do you DVR your shows to watch when you have a bit of spare time?

Maybe you like to have your buddies over for Monday night football or your gal pals over to watch the latest Bachelor?

Or maybe, you watch all your shows on your laptop in bed.

People today are consuming TV differently and here at Tekoia, we want to find out how you consume your shows.

The TV Is Not Dead

You might think with bigger-screen smartphones or Retina-display tablets, watching shows on these devices would be the norm.

But, in fact, Nielson reported that while digital viewing for Americans aged 18-64 has doubled from 11 minutes to 27 minutes, watching programs on the television still dominates how people consume TV.

Typically, Americans spend an average of 4.5 hours a day viewing their favorite series on TV.

And if you have a family, most weeknights mean your children are on their smartphones while your wife is on the tablet and you’re watching the news.

An Ofcom study reveals families are watching more TV together, but they’re also on social media too.

Binge-Watching Is An Emerging Trend

Thanks to media streaming services like Netflix, Instant Amazon, and Hulu Plus, binge-watching is becoming a popular way to consume TV.

According to a Netflix survey, 61% of people said they binge-watch regularly and up to 73% of people admitted to preferring binge-watching over traditional ways of watching shows.
You might think this means reserving the entire weekend to watch the entire season of Lost non-stop.

But, it’s not.

Nowadays, binge-watching refers to viewing 2-6 episodes of a series in one sitting. Many people agree that doing this makes the show appear better – and for them – long complex storytelling is something they crave.

So, what are the top 10 binge-worthy series to watch?

1. The 100
2. How to Get Away With Murder
3. Empire
4. Game of Thrones
5. Scandal
6. Orange is the New Black
7. House of Cards
8. The Wire
9. The Good Wife
10. The Mindy Project
