How Sharing Photos Has Moved From Photo Albums to Photo Streaming

16 Sep 2015

Technology has changed radically in the past few decades. And there’s no better representation than with the photos you take and save

Since digital photography is a huge industry, and the thought of not taking a selfie seems like a foreign concept, how did people before the invention of smartphones and the Internet share their photos?

Where did they display them or save them?

Displaying and saving your photos has changed drastically from the previous generation to the present day.

Here at Tekoia we like to look at how technology has changed. Whether it’s how appliances have changed or how the remote control became popular, we love to learn about how technology has improved over our lifespan.

Let’s take a crash course on the history of displaying – and saving – photos over the decades.

Remember Those Family Portraits?

If you were an 80’s child living in the US, then you can probably remember how every year you were dragged to Sears to take a family portrait. If you live in a different country you may have a local store or photographer who took your family portrait.

It wasn’t by any means something you look fondly back on – skin blemishes, unsightly 80’s style perms, or all the polyester – but you can appreciate the simplicity of it all.

Those portraits hung on your wall throughout your childhood. Good ol’ times eh?

All The Photo Albums

What happens every time you visit your grandparents? After they ask for your help with their Smart TV or smartphone, they whip open the old photo album, and you spend the next hour looking at photos of your father as a child.

Are we right?

Stacks and stacks of photo albums are probably in your grandparents home right now.

Your grandparents lived in a time where people took portraits and pictures, had them printed, and then saved them in countless photo albums.

Photo albums have come a long way – from the old black and white pictures with the sticker corner pieces to photo albums where you slide in your picture between protective sheets – one thing’s for sure, they were necessary back then.

Taking photos and having them developed was the norm up until the mid-2000s when digital cameras replaced film cameras.

Digital Cameras Changed Photography Forever

When going digital became a common thing, the landscape of photography drastically changed. People no longer had to send their film to Wal-Mart – or an independent film store – to have their pictures developed.

There were no more issues with overexposure or worse – ending up with someone else’s photos!

With the option of using digital cameras, saving photos was now in our hands. Over the course of years, digital cameras have also come a long way.

In the beginning, the only option available to consumers was saving your photos on a CompactFlash (CF) card. Once the card filled up, you had to download your photos to your computer’s hard drive.

While this option is still available today –thought SD cards have mostly replaced CF cards – there are other ways to save and display your images.

Today, you can take a selfie with your smartphone and it can be immediately uploaded to Google Photos. Or, if you have our SURE Universal app, you can take your photos and with a few clicks, stream them on your TV!

Creating A Lasting Impression

Taking photos will never go out of style. But how we take photos, where we display them and how we save them will always change.

With the SURE Universal app, though, our streaming option gives you the added pleasure of viewing your images on the big screen with your family and friends, for everyone to see.

Over to you – tell us a funny story. Maybe about the time when you got your photos back from being developed, and you were like, that’s not my family!
