3 Reasons to Ditch Your Remote Controls for Good

24 Nov 2015

Do you sometimes feel you have too many remotes lying around the house?

It’s enough to drive you crazy – trying to find the right remote control for the right device.

There’s your PlayStation remote and your Roomba remote. You may even have an Apple (or other streaming media device) remote as well as a DVR remote and a TV remote.

It seems the more technologically advanced we become, the more remotes we end up accumulating. And there are even remotes for devices that probably don’t really need a remote like a dehumidifier or a motherboard for your computer. Odd isn’t it?

You may not even realize how many remotes you really have – we bet there are still remotes you never took out of the plastic – but it’s safe to say it’s probably one too many.

Let’s look at three reasons to say goodbye to your remote controls for good.

1. Remotes Get Lost All the Time

Does this happen to you?

You’re a parent and you need to cook up a meal for the family, but your children want to watch a cartoon. You don’t mind this one time, so you start checking around for the remote.

Toys are everywhere, makeshift forts with blankets and cushions are all over the living room floor, and there you are – on your hands and knees – searching everywhere for this clunky device.

You don’t get it; the TV remote you have is huge, yet every day you can spend up to 20 minutes searching for it. Your TV remote is lost again.

We’re sure this scenario plays out – even if you don’t have children – every week in your home, right?

What’s funny is where your remote actually ends up. The most popular place a TV remote ends up is stuck in the couch. Runner up? Your bathroom. Go figure.

2. Having Too Many Remote Controls Gets Expensive

Now that you found your remote (finally!) it’s not even working properly. Your TV remote is dead, and it needs new batteries.

Batteries can rule your life, especially if you have young children.

Every time one of your many remotes die you have to shell out more money to replace those batteries.

Sure, you can buy rechargeable batteries, but then more times than not, your rechargeable batteries aren’t fully charged when you need them, and they take up too much space (since you don’t throw them away, you need a place to store them now).

3. Too Many Remote Contols are Wasteful

Earlier this year, we at Tekoia launched the #TrashYourRemote campaign and epic giveaway (congrats to Jenni T, who won an HTC One smartphone and  Urszula W., Tee A., Rupert S and Jenni LN, who won Roku streamers.)

We asked everyone to trash his or her remotes and to opt for a greener lifestyle.

When you have too many remotes, this isn’t green living and, in fact, it’s wasteful. But we all know companies still manufacture products that come bundled with their own remotes (and rightfully so. What’s a TV without a remote?). We end up buying these products and cluttering up our homes with unnecessary remotes.

There’s a Better Way

Instead of trying to juggle all the remotes in your house, why not use a universal app instead?

Our Sure Universal works on all the popular devices and appliances. It’ll save you the headache of finding your missing remote and save you money too.

But, there’s more to it than ditching all your remotes. What about the manufacturers?

We wonder how long it’ll take for these companies to stop manufacturing remotes and work together with apps – like ours – that can integrate their remote into a system with all the other remotes in your home.

This would save so much on waste, not only in batteries, but the actual remote itself.

Over to you – count how many remotes you have and let us know. Are you ready to say goodbye to your many remotes and say hello to the Sure Universal?
